In the first few weeks of the new year, I’ve been doing some housekeeping, cleaning up files and photographing artwork. Having worked as a commercial artist and designer for many years, you pick up an number of techniques and styles, and when left to your own devices it can be complicated to choose a path. Artists are often defined by their “style” so jumping around, though beneficial to stretching your wings, isn’t the best policy when trying to collect an audience or following. I often paint florals, often in monotone with an emphasis on mark making and fine line work that emulates drawing rather than painting. This pink poppy piece, although painted a while ago, I think adds a playfulness to my work, particularly in the use of colour. I titled it Blancmange, after the pink wobbly party dessert from my childhood. it seemed the perfect marriage of poppies evoking memory, but also evoking joy.
